Napoleon Trail, Italy 🇮🇹

If you’re ever in Trieste (or doing a little day trip from Ljubljana like I did), do not skip the Napoleon Trail. It’s such a chill and beautiful walk, and honestly? Kinda perfect in every season. I’ve done it in both fall and spring – and wow, it’s like walking through two completely different postcards (scroll for the photos – you’ll see what I mean!).

Where to start + park
I usually park near the Obelisco in Opicina – there’s free parking, and it’s super close to the trailhead. You can also take the cute historic tram from Trieste center to Opicina when it’s running, which adds to the adventure.
The vibe
This is not a “bring your hiking poles and suffer” kind of trail. It’s flat, easy, and more of a scenic walk than a workout.
- Takes about 1.5–2 hours round trip
- Around 7 km total (3.5 km one way)
- You get amazing views of the Gulf of Trieste the entire time
- There are benches where you can sit, chill, snack, stare at the sea and question your life choices in a good way

Fun fact (kinda?)
It’s called the Napoleonica because apparently Napoleon’s army might’ve used this route, but no one’s 100% sure. Either way, the name stuck and now it sounds way more dramatic than it actually is 😂
Why I love it
Because it’s the easiest way to feel like you’re in nature and by the sea without breaking a sweat. I always end the walk with a coffee or gelato in the nearby village (yes, there’s a village called Prosecco – bless Italy).

Honestly, it’s one of those spots I keep going back to. You get those endless sea views, wildflowers or fall leaves depending on the season, and that sweet Trieste breeze. What’s not to love?
